Our Company Story
In the spring of 2010, company founder and president, James Latta, arrived in Egypt to teach English at the American University in Cairo, unaware that within a year he would witness firsthand a revolution that would shake the foundations of the entire region. Initially called The Jasmine Revolution, these seismic changes would come to be collectively remembered as The Arab Spring.
On the night of February 18th, 2011, James found himself at the Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, awaiting the end of Egypt’s nightly military curfew so he could return to Cairo and resume classes. President Hosni Mubarak had resigned a week prior, and the military had temporarily assumed control of the country, which was in turmoil. James had to reschedule his flight three times before he could return from his winter break back in the United States.
Back at his home in downtown Cairo, James found friends and associates scrambling to abandon the neighborhoods near the protests at Tahrir Square. In haste he created a WordPress site designed to help fellow expats and international students quickly navigate to safe housing far from the hotspots and danger of downtown.
What he did not realize at the time was that his model – created in the midst of the Jasmine Revolution – would be transformed into a successful B2B platform. Combined with knowledge of international logistics and a network of skillfully curated global connections, this portfolio of services would later be used by multinational companies to relocate staff overseas into secure, cost-effective housing. The success of his business model would become known as “The Jasmine Effect” and its roots in the revolution would be immortalized as the namesake of our company, Jasmine Mobility and Logistics International.
James Latta discovered his passion – helping people through innovation, technology, and relationships.
